1901 was a significant year for the sport of basketball when colleges began organizing games. In the beginning, only a handful of Colleges played, such as Yale, Minnesota, Dartmouth, Columbia, Chicago, Utah and Navy. In the beginning of collegiate sports , most teams played less than 10 games, with the best players playing between 15 and 16. In the year 1901, Yale went 10-4 to take home the first ever national college championship.

The next year the University of Minnesota would go 11 and zero to become the first team that was undefeated in basketball. In the beginning, there were issues with injuries as fouling rules were in place, but a lack of qualified referees prevented them from being able to have good referees for every game. Between 1905 and 1910, numerous American activist groups called on the authorities to intervene and impose limitations on the game. In 1910, President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt encouraged all colleges in America to establish an official body to govern themselves prior to it becoming too late. during the spring of 1910, they created The Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

When the Colleges were just beginning to establish the professional leagues. They were a bit sporadic and the teams weren't all participating in leagues. There were teams that were independently and traveled across throughout the country with local teams in exchange for money. they were referred to as Barnstormers Some of these teams included those of the Original Celtics, the SPHA's and The Buffalo Germans, the Trojans of New York and two African American teams, the New York Renaissance Five(or Rens) and the most well-known of the Barnstorming teams and the sole one operating today, the Harlem Globetrotters.

Teams from the Early Professional teams. The Original Celtics where an offshoot of the team known as The New York Celtics, the New York Celtics began in 1914 but ended in the war of 1914. The team was disbanded at the end in World War I Jim Furey and his brother Tom revived the team. The Furey's introduced a variety of new ideas to the game of basketball however their most significant innovations were Zone defense and the first contracts given to every player.

Contracts were crucial because in the beginning, players would constantly switch teams to the team that was the best paying through contracts, and the Celtics were able to stop this. In 1921, the Celtics were admitted to the Eastern league, and they beat Trenton in the final and the Celtics were not content waiting around for the next year, so joining in the Metropolitan League. After a start of 13-0, the Celtics quit from the league due the absence of competition. Then they returned to in the Eastern League but again dominated in such a way that they could not attract a crowd. So they drew once more.
